China uses less pesticide

Được Đăng Bởi | December 6, 2017 |

BEIJING — China’s pesticide use has dropped in the past three years amid a campaign to ensure zero growth in pesticide use by 2020, an official said Monday.

Zeng Yande, head of the crop production department of the Ministry of Agriculture, said the ministry tightened market access and punished unlicensed companies as well as the makers and sellers of fake pesticides this year.

Besides the drop in pesticide use, China has also raised the efficiency of pesticide use and stepped up the use of biological pesticides, Zeng said.

China’s average annual pesticide use in 2012-2014 rose 9.2 percent from the 2009-2011 level, weighing on production costs and food safety.

In early 2015, the ministry started a campaign to ensure zero growth in pesticide application by 2020.

Zeng said more efforts will be made as part of the campaign, including popularizing green pest control technology, supporting professional crop protection organizations and increasing the efficiency of pesticide application.

Political advisors offer suggestions to China’s grain pricing reform

Được Đăng Bởi | November 23, 2017 |

BEIJING, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) — China’s political advisors met Thursday to discuss ways to reform the country’s grain pricing system.

The bi-weekly consultation session was chaired by Yu Zhengsheng, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.

Political advisors said grain security is an issue of strategic importance. China has achieved steady growth in grain production in recent years and its food security has been effectively safeguarded.

However, the current grain pricing and storage policies must be improved to address many problems, such as weakened role of the market, a large inventory build-up and high fiscal burdens.

The advisors put forward proposals including measures to reform the country’s minimum procurement price system by making it more flexible and letting the market play a more decisive role in the pricing of grain.

Measures should also be taken to improve ways to subsidize the grain growers in order to prevent a drop in their income, they suggested, while saying reforms should also be conducted on grain procurement and storage enterprises.

The consultation sessions are used by political advisors to study major issues with experts and officials.
