UK to export pig semen to China in S$92.5m deal

Posted by | December 9, 2013 |

Britain has won the right to export pig semen to China in a deal worth £45 million (S$92.5 million) a year.

Mr Owen Paterson, the environment secretary, who is accompanying British Prime Minister David Cameron on his trip to China, has also embarked on negotiations to export pigs’ trotters — a local delicacy — to China.

Under the deal with China, the “porcine semen” can be flown to the country in frozen and fresh form. Pigs will not be flying but their seed will take to the air.

A No 10 spokesperson said: “We’re doing all we can to ensure that businesses up and down the country reap the rewards from our relationship with China. And that includes our pig farmers. This new deal to export pig semen will be worth £45 million to UK firms and means Britain’s best pigs will help sustain the largest pig population in the world.

“And we’re not stopping there, we’re talking to the Chinese about serving up pigs trotters on Beijing’s finest dining tables. That would be a real win-win — a multimillion pound boost for Britain and a gastronomic treat for Chinese diners.”

The exports start in the first quarter of next year. Four UK artificial insemination centres, based in England and Northern Ireland, will start making preparations for the exports in the new year.

Half of the world’s pigs are in China but the country needs to improve pig genetics. A government source said: “China has an interest to increase the efficiency of their production, while minimising the environmental impact of increased production. The UK industry for pig production can play a large and important role in helping China achieve greater efficiency through the provision of high-quality genetic stock.

“UK porcine semen will be key to help the Chinese improve their pig production and make the industry more productive in the long term. The quantities are not the important factor for this trade; it is the quality that is important.”

Rock Lobster Fishery Gains Third MSC Certification

Australia’s most valuable single species fishery, the Western Australian Rock Lobster fishery, has gained a third MSC certification. With an estimated value of $200M per year, the Western Australia Rock Lobster fisher was first certified back in 2000 and was recertified in 2006. This recertification has again demonstrated that the rock lobster stocks are healthy, while fishing practices have minimal impact on the marine eco-system and the fishery is well managed.

As a result products from this fishery will continue to bear the blue MSC ecolabel, which assures customers that the products come from a sustainable and well managed fishery. These conditions relate to the setting of well defined harvest control rules, the use of data in setting these control rules and the collection of data on the spatial extent of the fishery. These conditions have been agreed by the fishery, and will be met by the second annual audit in November 2013.

Yurun Group Sees Profits Down

Chinese integrated meat processor China Yurun Food Group has encountered a drop of 10.1 per cent of the Group’s gross profits. The company said the decrease was mainly due to the significant increase in raw material costs, in particular hog prices, together with weakened market confidence in the group’s products and the increasing difficulty in transferring the group’s increased operation costs to its customers. The decrease has also been attributed to product promotion activities conducted by the group in the fourth quarter of 2011, which were targeted at retaining market share.

The Group will nonetheless continue to expand its capacity, accelerate the enhancement of its nationwide production capacity in the coming years, so as to further strengthen its leading position in the industry and capture the tremendous business opportunities in both upstream and downstream markets.

Cargill opens Poultry production base in Lai’an ,Anhui province, China

Posted by | December 2, 2013 |

Cargill held the inauguration ceremony of its world-class integrated poultry operation in Lai’an Anhui today. This project initiated in 2009, is a part of Cargill’s continuous effort to support the modernization of agriculture and food safety in China and the total investment is approximately US$250 million.

The fully-integrated project covers each stage of the poultry supply chain, including chicken breeding, raising, feed production, hatching, slaughtering and processing, which has the capacity to process approximately 65 million chickens per year, as well as 176,000 metric tonnes poultry products per year.

And in a much closer race Cargill, Tyson American also has established his own base in Lvxian, Shandong since 2012, have the capacity of 3.6 million broiler per year. And Tyson also plan to open two biggest broiler factories in Lvxian Town and Yanzhuang Town in 2013.

Year 2013 was a tough year for China’s poultry industry.  From another perspective, the industry performance also provided a rare opportunity for the expansion of the leading enterprises as seen above.

According to Chen Jianhua’s analysis, there are two main reasons why international giants one and another enter China mainland market, First of all, China has a large population and a huge consumer market, any business will not ignore this market. Secondly, with the advance of urbanization as well as the raise of CPI, this market still has a huge room to grow.

In addition, the industry concentration of China market is far less than the United States, Chen Jianhua commented that the top five companiesin he USA combined market share was up to 67%. At present, there are tens of thousands of broiler farming enterprises in China, Fujian Sunner as China’s largest broiler farming enterprises, who only controls 5% market share , he also said that China’s tomorrow is United States’ today, the future of domestic farming enterprises must have an intense phase integration, now is only a beginning and industry downturns precisely offers a best time for large enterprises mergers and acquisitions.

Growth in world meat prices

Posted by | December 2, 2013 |

Global meat prices over the past 10 years has grown rapidly, with the 2002 and 2004 figures for comparison, since 2004, more than two-fold increase in poultry prices, beef prices rose nearly twice the price and pork increased by about 50%.

Rising demand for meat and poultry mainly due to the impact of growth in population and income, this is common phenomenon particularly in the developing countries. Global beef production remained unchanged from 2008 to 2013, while the global pork and poultry production continues to grow at a rate of 2% per year.

In the past two years, the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong beef imports tripled and has become the world’s largest beef importer. This is under the condition that the global beef prices reached a record high and beef production remained virtually unchanged. U.S. beef production in 2013 is expected to decline 1%, but beef exports are expected to rise 2.8%.
